Man Makes – Chocolate Pinecones

I got a little bit of help for this post. In my naivety I thought making chocolate pinecones would be the easiest thing in the world – this is not true in any way.
It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life…I’ve had a pretty easy life…

The basic idea was to use chocolate buttons to create pinecones, because .. wine not?! ehhh…

We used Cadburys giant buttons, because why go for regular size buttons when giant is available!
We melted a bowl of cheap chocolate that would be used as the glue the hold the pinecone chocolate messes together.

Now I have to say, I didn’t fully think this through before I started it… so I spent a while doing pointless things with chocolate buttons (including eating A LOT) before I had an epiphany…

…Yorkshire Pudding tray!! I popped a puddle of chocolate in the base and built up ‘pinecones’ using the sides to create the right angle. Unfortunately I got so caught up in my own genius that I didn’t stop to think how I was going to get my pinecones out the the pan… I realised this as I was about to put the second layer on…

So I added parchment paper…but it just wasn’t working right. I was getting annoyed that this point… & eating more of the buttons than I should have been. The very definition of Hangry.

At this point my husband came home and schooled me in how to make pinecones out of chocolate.
You start with a single button flat on a flat surface and build up from there, using almost set melted chocolate as glue. You’ll want to angle your buttons upwards to create a real pinecone look!

Once he had the base layer in place he started cutting the bottoms of the buttons into triangles, so that the pieces fit together more easily; hopefully you can see what I mean in the pictures!

Just keep building up and building up until you have to squeeze two vertical buttons at the top and you’re left with this..

I know it’s difficult to  tell but the chocolate one is in the centre…

I thought this would be an easy Christmas DIY but boy was I wrong… definitely don’t drink wine while doing this one, but you will need it afterwards…to calm down your fury.

I thought they’d be great to use as place settings for Christmas dinner parties, just slot a name card in the top!

I’d love it if other people would try this DI-Wine and post pictures, let me know if y’all find it as hard as I did!!

  1. If he can make your engagement ring I guess a chocolate pine cone is a bit of a breeze! Practical husbands are the best.
